Schuyler Students Shine In Math Club Competition

The second annual Elementary Math Club recently concluded for the year.

Mrs. Veatch, the club sponsor, invited fifth-and sixth-grade students interested in learning and having fun with math to join this year’s club. Nine students stepped up to the challenge and met twice a week during March. Time was spent playing a variety of math games and working through centers, as well as completing practice problems to prepare for competition.

On the final day, seven of the nine club members competed in an on-demand math competition on Chromebooks. The competition was sponsored by the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Students completed a variety of tests, including Number Sense, a Sprint Round and Target Rounds.

Of the seven students who competed, three qualified for the regional competition. The regional contest was held Saturday, April 11, on the Truman State University campus. The students spent the morning working through a variety of math tests. Lunch was later provided by the Truman math department at Ryle Hall. At 1 p.m., a short awards ceremony was held, with friends and family invited to join competitors.

Although no Schuyler students advanced to the state competition this year, school officials said they were proud of the students’ effort and representation.

“They worked hard and represented our school well,” the Veatch said.
