Schuyler R-1 Board Approves Flooring Bid, Staffing Additions and Mileage Rate Increase
QUEEN CITY, Mo. — The Schuyler R-1 Board of Education met in regular session Jan. 21 and approved several items, including personnel changes, a flooring project, and an increase in mileage reimbursement, while hearing reports from district administrators on attendance, academic progress and facility improvements.
The board approved the hiring of Bobby Bair as a custodian. In addition, several individuals were added to the substitute list: Latisha Snider and Joseph Crawford as teacher substitutes; Lisa Nagel and Natasha Nolte as bus driver substitutes; and Kathleen Miller as a paraprofessional substitute.
Board members voted unanimously to increase the district’s mileage reimbursement to 70 cents per mile beginning Jan. 27, with a further increase to 72 cents per mile effective July 1 for the 2026–27 school year. A bid from Moore’s Floors Inc. for $68,842 was accepted for an epoxy flooring project.
Elementary Principal Katie Wayman reported December enrollment at 356 students in grades PK-6, with an attendance rate of 95.16 percent. First semester attendance averaged 95.62 percent. Wayman reviewed several activities from December, including a formal holiday luncheon, a schoolwide trip to support Truman State’s Lady Bulldogs basketball team, and a holiday movie for younger students. The school also hosted a dental truck before and after winter break, with increased participation over previous years. Sixth graders helped lead PBS expectation reviews as students returned from break.
Upcoming elementary events include a K–1 music program Jan. 29, School Counseling Week from Feb. 2–6, parent-teacher conferences on Feb. 13, and Courtwarming events the same day. Kindness Week is scheduled for Feb. 17–20.
High School Principal Ed Koser reported December enrollment at 249 students, up slightly from the previous month, with a 96.23 percent attendance rate. He noted strong participation in the junior high weights program and highlighted recent recognition for cross-country athletes. Asher Applegate competed at the state level and was named to the All-Area honorable mention list. Three of four team members achieved Academic All-State honors by maintaining a GPA of 3.6 or higher.
Athletic Director Laci Tallman reported that basketball season was progressing well despite a high number of away games due to tournaments. She highlighted professional development efforts for coaching staff and introduced student assistant Caden Veatch, who plans to pursue a career in education and athletics.
Superintendent Shawn Corbett announced that the district received a top rating during its annual safety inspection conducted Jan. 7. The number of infractions dropped from more than 40 in 2020–21 to just four in 2025–26. He credited the custodial team, faculty, and Assistant Superintendent Kyle Windy for the improvement.
Corbett also recognized January as School Board Appreciation Month and thanked board members Andy Akers, Jill Moncrief, Marta Aeschliman, Marti McGoldrick, Verl Gordy, Wanda Homer and Patrick Robinson for their service.
The board approved the December financial report, showing $963,824 in revenue and $1,016,011 in expenses. Consent agenda items were approved, including minutes from the Dec. 17 meeting and all bills, with a separate vote for a bill to Kaitlyn Stump. Akers abstained from that vote.
The board entered executive session at 6:20 p.m. to discuss personnel and student matters and returned to regular session at 7:30 p.m. The meeting was adjourned immediately afterward. The next regular meeting is tentatively set for Feb. 18 at 6 p.m.
