Schuyler R-1 Board Accepts Key Retirements, Approves Winter Readiness Measures

QUEEN CITY, Mo. — The Schuyler R-1 Board of Education approved several personnel changes and winter preparations during its regular meeting Nov. 19, as the district heads into the holiday season.

Board members accepted the resignations of Richelle Hinners, food service cook, and Sarah Hoehne, Parents as Teachers staff member. They also approved retirement notices from Frank Miller, special education teacher and bus driver, and Cristina Garrett, Title I teacher.

The board awarded a $9,498 snow and ice removal contract to Tyson March and approved Morgan Buckallew as a substitute teacher. Madison Taylor was granted an extra duty contract to assist with varsity basketball cheerleading.

In financial matters, the district reported revenues of $462,626 and expenses of $756,889 for October. The board approved the financial report unanimously.

The board set the candidate filing period for the upcoming school board election from Dec. 9 to Dec. 30. Three seats with three-year terms will be on the ballot. A special board meeting is scheduled for Dec. 11 to review the annual audit.

Elementary and high school administrators highlighted recent events and academic achievements. Elementary enrollment stood at 357 with 95% attendance in October. Parent-teacher conferences saw nearly 89% participation. Activities included Red Ribbon Week, a successful Book Fair, and music and art showcases.

At the high school level, October enrollment reached 251 with a 95.09% attendance rate. The FBLA hosted its annual Mom Prom with about 40 participating couples. Upcoming events include an intruder drill and the Tri-Rivers Basketball Tournament.

Special education students earned top honors at the Area Special Olympics bowling competition in Chillicothe. State-level competition is scheduled for January in Kansas City. The Young Athletes Program began Nov. 8 and will continue through December.

Winter sports are underway, and two students earned All- District Honor Band recognition. The ambulance district will provide coverage for basketball games as needed.
