The Schuyler Scholar Bowl team traveled to Marceline on Saturday, April 12 to participate in the district 7 scholar bowl tournament. Other teams included in the district were Knox, Paris, Marceline, Canton, Scotland, Putnam, Milan, and La Plata. The 9 teams all drew for their opening round opponents. Schuyler drew Milan, La Plata, and Putnam for the morning rounds.
In their first game, Milan got three of the first five tossups but, then, the Rams got the remaining 17 tossups. The Rams bonus conversion was also strong and resulted in Schuyler setting a single game scoring record. The final was Schuyler 570, Mialn 90. Carter Hoffmeyer had 10 tossups, Colin Oliver, 4, Jaxson Kaden 4, and Parker Dabney 1.
In the second game of the day, the Rams matched up with La Plata. The Schuyler hot streak continued as they built a 180-40 point lead at half time. The Rams shutout La Plata in the second half while cruising to a 430-40 victory. Hoffmeyer had 7 tossups, Kaden 5, Oliver 3, and Dabney 2.
In the final game before lunch, the Rams stayed hungry against Putnam County. At the half, the Rams led 210-100. Schuyler would finish off the Midgets 440-160. Hoffmeyer 7, Oliver 4, and Kaden 2.
Four teams finished the morning with a 3-0 record: Marceline, Paris, Knox, and Schuyler. By virtue of their 480 points per game average, the Rams earned the 1 seed and would face the 4 seed Paris Coyotes. Marceline earned the 2 seed and would play the 3rd seed, Knox County. Based on the morning rounds, Carter Hoffmeyer earned the fourth spot on the all-tournament team by averaging 80 points per game.
In the semi-finals, Paris was quick on the buzzers and got 6 tossups in the first half. The Rams only got three tossups and two others went unanswered. The Rams were strong on the bonus questions and were able to stick with the Coyotes. At half time, the Rams trailed 140-130.
The second half was a Ram stampede. Schuyler got three of the first four tossups against Paris to build a 220-150 lead. With Paris feeling the pressure, a Coyote buzzed early and was wrong on question 16. Kaden rebounded the miss and swept the bonus parts to add 40 points to the lead. Hoffmeyer got the next tossup and the Rams swept the bonus again to move the score to 300-150. On question 18, Kaden got another tossup and the Rams swept the bonuses one more time. Hoffmeyer tacked on two more tossups and Oliver added one to round out the match. The Rams punched their ticket to the championship with a 410-190 victory. Hoffmeyer finished with 6 tossups while Kaden and Oliver had 3 each.
In the other semifinal, Knox topped Marceline to earn a spot in the championship game opposite the Rams. Knox got out to an early 50-0 lead before the Rams heated up on the buzzers again. At the half, the Rams had built a 220-100 lead. The Eagles were never able to close the gap. The Rams answered 7 of 11 tossups in the second half and cruised to a third straight district title. The final score was 440-190. Hoffmeyer lead the scoring with 8 tossups, Kaden 4, and Dabney and Oliver 1 each.
The Rams have won the district title 3 years running. Schuyler will take on Rock Port on Tuesday, April 22 at Schuyler in a best of three contest.
