Outdoors With Kevin Fox: The Necessity of Shooting Sticks

The buck suddenly appeared on the path that ran below me along a dry creek bed. Sometimes that’s what deer do — one minute there’s nothing to see, and the next there’s a deer standing there. If the buck continued on the way he was walking, he would come to within more than 50 yards of me. If I had been using a different gun, I would have already taken the shot. However, I wasn’t using just any rifle. Lying across my lap was my Thompson/ Center Hawken black‑powder rifle, loaded with 60 grains of fffg powder topped by a…

The Inside Story About One Northeast Missouri Man’s Journey to Become a U.S. Citizen By Echo Menges For those of us born into it, citizenship is often something we don’t think much about. We grow up with a passport, the right to vote, the ability to work and live freely — and rarely question whether that will ever change. But for Javi Gil, 51, of rural Rutledge, none of those things were guaranteed. Not even after spending decades in the United States, raising a family, leading a fire department, and dedicating his life to public service. When delays in renewing…

Outdoors With Kevin Fox: Making Plans for 2026

I wrote last week about thinking of planning a fishing trip for 2026. I hope it at least got you thinking about getting out and enjoying the many opportunities God has provided us on this planet. Many, many years ago — perhaps 30 if not a little more — a friend, my dad and I traveled to Upton, Wyoming, to go on a pronghorn antelope hunt. I’ll be honest: I was nervous about the trip. I planned for it all summer and did a lot of shooting with my Remington Model 788, chambered in .243. I did this because I…

Outdoors With Kevin Fox: Now Is the Time to Make Plans for That 2026 Fishing Trip

Bond and Wayne’s friendship goes back to their days playing on the USC college football team. In the movie, Bond’s character works hard at maintaining the peace, but he also enjoys fly fishing for a huge salmon that lives in a particular stream near the town of Innisfree, Ireland. I know full well it’s just a movie, but I connected with Father Lonergan. He reminded me of my pastor for many years, Dr. David Castrodale. I knew I could ask him anything at any time for advice; I knew he loved the Lord and was serious about his duties. But…
