Schuyler R-1 Honors Veterans With Patriotic Assembly

QUEEN CITY, Mo. — Schuyler R-1 Schools commemorated Veterans Day with a heartfelt assembly on Nov. 11, drawing community members, students and honored guests together in a celebration of service and sacrifice.

Veterans and their spouses were welcomed with coffee and refreshments prior to the program, which was organized by teacher Ryan Kaden. The assembly featured student participation and a keynote address delivered by Kaden, highlighting the importance of honoring military service and the deeper meaning behind the commonly spoken phrase, “Thank you for your service.”

In his remarks, Kaden recounted the story of Kyle Carpenter, the youngest living Medal of Honor recipient. He detailed Carpenter’s challenges in high school, his decision to join the Marine Corps, and the heroic act that earned him the nation’s highest military honor — throwing himself on a grenade to save fellow Marines during a deployment in Afghanistan.

Carpenter, who survived extensive injuries, went on to author a book and adopt a new response to expressions of gratitude: “You are worth it.” Kaden shared how Carpenter’s message emphasizes the value of every American and the deep personal commitment service members make when they choose to serve.

“Veterans choose to serve for many reasons,” Kaden said. “But despite the varied paths, their collective service sends a powerful message — that our country and its people are worth it.”

Kaden urged attendees to honor veterans not just with words but through actions that uphold the nation’s values, promote unity and ensure liberty and justice for all.

The program concluded with a call to “We the People” — a reminder from Kaden that the strength of the nation lies in its citizens and the responsibility each American bears in shaping its future.
