Schuyler R-1 Board Approves Staffing, Program Funding and Facility Plans Ahead of Superintendent Transition
QUEEN CITY, Mo. – The Schuyler R-1 Board of Education approved new hires, program stipends, and facility upgrades during its regular May 15 meeting, as Superintendent Kyle Windy prepares to conclude his tenure at the end of June.
Windy, who will continue to serve through June, has overseen key end-of-year initiatives and summer preparations, including hiring decisions, summer school planning and capital projects. He was also named junior high head football coach for the upcoming season.
The board accepted the resignation of paraprofessional Shannon Forsmark and hired Jacob Bleything as junior high and high school physical education teacher and Jordan Kaden as junior high and high school art teacher. Both were also approved for coaching roles: Bleything will lead boys junior high basketball and golf, while Kaden will serve as assistant varsity football coach and junior high track coach.
Additional coaching and sponsor appointments included Kerry Schoonover as varsity assistant softball coach, Amanda Lindquist as varsity football cheer coach, Holly Fischer as varsity basketball cheer coach and Haylee Burns as drill team coach. The board also approved revised stipend rates: $500 per week for head high school coaches, $350 for assistants, $400 for head junior high coaches, $300 for junior high assistants, and $200 for cheer and drill team sponsors.
Summer school pay was finalized at $25 per hour for certified teachers. Support staff—including paraprofessionals, cooks and the nurse—will be paid at standard hourly rates. Bus drivers will receive $90 per day, and the summer school director will earn a $5,000 stipend.
A $500 stipend was also approved for Jenny Kaden for her work with the “TOO Good for Drugs” program. Mindy Roberts was named the recipient of a LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) training grant, pending availability of funds.
In financial matters, the board approved April revenue of $602,399 and expenditures of $731,796. Equity Bank was selected to serve as the district’s depository for the next five years.
Elementary principal Katie Wayman reported April enrollment of 347 students and a 95.83 percent attendance rate. She highlighted numerous end-of-year activities including state testing, science fairs, musical performances, and the Sixth Grade Promotion. Summer school is scheduled from May 27 to June 18.
High school principal Ed Koser reported enrollment at 241, with a year-to-date attendance rate of 94.89 percent. Twelve students earned perfect attendance for April, and 210 students qualified for attendance rewards. Graduation is set for May 18, with other events including the FFA banquet and state track competitions later in the month.
Special Services Coordinator Raven Weaver said the district is currently serving 118 students with special needs. One student and one adult athlete will participate in the State Special Olympics in Kirksville from May 30 to June 1.
In his superintendent’s report, Windy detailed upcoming capital projects: bleacher removal and installation scheduled from June 9 to June 20, band room updates beginning May 27, and a $185,000 investment in new furniture and classroom fixtures. He also noted a budget report will be presented at the June board meeting.
The board adjourned at 8:50 p.m. The next regular session is scheduled for June 18 at 6 p.m.
