Schuyler R-1 Board of Education Approves Salaries, Hires Staff

QUEEN CITY, Mo. — The Schuyler R-1 Board of Education met in regular session on April 16, 2025, at 6 p.m., where members handled a full agenda that included approving 2025-26 salary schedules, hiring new staff, and hearing reports from administrators on upcoming activities.
President Andy Akers called the meeting to order with six board members present. Kevin Buckallew was absent.
Following approval of the agenda and minutes from the March meeting, the board officially seated returning members Patrick Robinson and Marti McGoldrick, who took the oath of office.
In board officer elections, Andy Akers was re-elected president, Jill Moncrief was re-elected vice president, Laurie Nagel was retained as board secretary, and Tiffany Newland will continue as treasurer.
Director of Finance Tiffany Newland presented the March financial report, noting $565,754 in revenue and $902,921 in expenses. The board unanimously approved the report.
During public comment, thank-you notes were acknowledged from the Transportation Department and Ruth Enterprises.
Maintenance Bids, Salaries, and Substitutes Approved
Under old business, the board approved a $6,050 bid from Muddy Bottoms Turf Solutions for maintenance and lawn care for the football field, practice field, and track area.
Superintendent Kyle Windy provided an update on the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP).
In new business, the board approved several personnel items:
Approved additional substitutes, including Tierra Gordy, Evelyn Stokes, Madison Taylor, Sandy Daniels, McKenzie Zoda (teacher substitutes), and Amy Shotten (bus driver substitute).
Approved the 2025-26 salary schedules for teachers, support staff, and extra duties.
Set substitute and hourly pay rates, including $120 daily for teacher substitutes and $100 daily for cook/custodian substitutes.
Approved participation in the Missouri Capital Asset Advantage Treasury (MOCAAT) program.
Accepted resignations from Chris Prewitt (Athletic Director/PE Teacher/Varsity Basketball Coach), Tiffany Harris (7-12 Art Teacher), and Rachel Prewitt (Parents as Teachers and Occupational Therapist).
Approved updates to Policy 5550 and Regulation 2785.
The board also tentatively set its next meeting for May 15 at 7 p.m.
Busy Spring Ahead for Elementary and High School Students
Elementary Principal Katie Wayman reported a March enrollment of 347 students and 93.81% attendance. Upcoming elementary events include MAP Testing from April 29-May 8, Elementary Parent-Teacher Conferences on April 24, multiple field trips, and Sixth Grade Promotion on May 15.
Wayman also praised staff efforts during Paraprofessional Day and highlighted the successes of the Elementary Math Club, which qualified three students for the state MCTM competition.
High School Principal Ed Koser reported March enrollment at 241 students with 93.65% attendance. Parent-Teacher Conference turnout in March was 16%, representing 40 students.
Highlights from the high school included:
FBLA’s successful Daddy Daughter Dance, drawing around 75 couples.
Drama Club’s first-ever short film production.
Student artwork featured in the Kirksville Arts Association’s Annual High School Art Showcase.
Three FFA members, Rylynn Crabtree, Jarrett Groseclose, and Brenna Whitlow, earning Missouri FFA State Degrees.
Koser also outlined numerous upcoming activities, from the high school home track meet on April 28 to Graduation scheduled for May 18.
Special Services and Superintendent Updates
Special Services Coordinator Raven Weaver reported the district is currently serving 118 students through special education programs. She noted participation in the Special Olympics Young Athletes program and highlighted upcoming events, including the Area Track Meet on April 26 in Kirksville.
Superintendent Windy provided construction updates, reporting that:
Bleacher removal and installation are scheduled to begin the week of June 9.
Construction of a new utility storage building has begun.
Work on the football field restrooms will begin after April 28.
Executive Session: Staffing Decisions Made
Following executive session, the board took action on several employment items:
Hired MaKinley Aeschliman as a paraprofessional and Tanna Calhoun as the school nurse.
Approved clerical, transportation, maintenance, food service, custodial, and paraprofessional staff contracts for the 2025-26 school year.
Approved summer workers Mason Windy and Ace Akers.
In terms of extra duty assignments:
Les Aeschliman was approved for the position of band instructor, but his appointment as vocal music instructor was not approved.
Jana Calhoun was named head softball coach for 2025-26.
MaKinley Aeschliman was approved as assistant girls basketball coach.
Brad Moncrief will serve as head baseball coach and oversee field turf maintenance.
Dane Stump was approved as middle school assistant football coach.
Additional coaching and activity sponsorship assignments for the 2025-26 school year were finalized, covering football, basketball, track, cheerleading, scholar bowl, and more.
