It was a weekend to remember for the Schuyler County Varsity Rams, who strung together two impressive wins—first toppling the Highland Cougars 10-2 on Friday, then edging out the Clark County Indians 5-4 on Monday in a gritty road victory. Both games showcased the Rams’ mix of timely hitting, aggressive base running, and standout pitching, with junior Gage Brownell right at the heart of it all.
In Friday’s home contest against Highland, Brownell was unstoppable at the plate and unshakable on the mound. The right-hander struck out nine over four hitless innings, allowing just two unearned runs and one walk. But he didn’t stop there. Brownell also went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, driving the Rams’ offense with a double in the second inning and singles in the first and fourth. His performance sparked a Rams lineup that exploded for six runs in the fourth to blow the game open.
Elliot Sevits, Colin Oliver, and Cohan Meade each made major contributions in the offensive surge. Oliver drove in two runs with a single, Meade knocked in another, and Sevits scored on a heads-up tag-up. The Rams also wreaked havoc on the base paths, stealing five bases—two apiece from Sevits and Brownell.
Meanwhile, Highland’s lone offensive sparks came from their base running, with Heath Feldkamp swiping three bags. But it wasn’t enough to overcome Schuyler County’s crisp execution and pitching command.
The Rams carried that momentum into Monday’s showdown at Clark County, where they leaned into their resilience and found a way to win a tightly contested 5-4 battle. Brody Weaver ignited the scoring in the first by stealing home, then added an RBI single in the fifth before scoring again on a sac fly from Brownell.
Meade added another RBI with a second-inning single, and his steady defense proved just as valuable—recording nine plays in the field without an error as the Rams turned in a clean defensive performance.
On the mound, Elliot Sevits came through in the clutch, tossing five solid innings in relief. He gave up seven hits and two runs but kept Clark County off balance with four strikeouts and just one walk. Lathan Martin started the game and held the Indians to two runs over two innings.
The Indians didn’t go quietly. Shortstop Elijah Miller drove in two runs, while leadoff hitter Chayce Webster went 3-for-4. But despite their nine hits and strong defensive play—Clark County also went error-free—Schuyler County’s timely hitting and clean execution made the difference.
Now riding a two-game winning streak, the Schuyler County Rams turn their attention to Tuesday’s matchup at Kirksville, looking to keep their hot streak alive. With players like Brownell, Weaver, and Sevits leading the charge, the Rams are showing they can win with power, precision, or just plain grit—whatever it takes.
