A fire broke out Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 22, in a shed on the campus of Schuyler County R-1 Schools. As a precaution, students in the nearby elementary building were relocated to another area.
According to Superintendent Kyle Windy, the shed served as a gathering place for bus drivers and included restrooms, coffee facilities, and storage for equipment such as a skid steer, lawn mower, and leftover turf.
According to Windy, Queen City Fire Chief Carl Snider stated that the fire was caused by a salamander heater being used outside the building to thaw frozen water pipes. The heater ignited combustible materials inside the shed’s exterior wall, and the flames spread from there.
No injuries were reported, but the shed and its contents sustained significant damage.
