Schuyler Celebrates 2020 Downing Appreciation Days
Downing Appreciation Days – better known as DAD – has enjoyed a long and notable history by offering up such activities as a big parade, Coffey Roper events, tractor pulls when the weather is dry, games, lots of food, prizes, music, baby shows, and of course, bingo. The area residents enjoyed all that this year at the 2020 DAD that occurred over the weekend on September 11 and 12. Unfortunately, the tractor pull was cancelled due to rain on Friday, and during the parade on Saturday it sprinkled, but the parade marched on and the watchers just pulled out their umbrellas.
The parade on Saturday was preceded by the annual Kiddie Parade, which is very popular with the locals. To lead the parade, the DAD committee selected Downing residents, Virginia and Dwayne Mullinix, as the 2020 Grand Marshalls. Virginia and Dwayne have been quite active in the DAD throughout the years. They worked at most of the DAD events, such as the bingo concession, the food stand, organizing the games and music events, and planning the parades. Dwayne worked in his dad’s salvage yard for many years and afterwards worked for the railroad for about 42 years. Both are active in their church, the United Methodist. Virginia crafts beautiful quilts and is a long time member of a local quilting guild. Their children are Donna Lloyd, Faron Mullinix, Daron Mullinix, and Dana Buster.
