Russell Paul Figge, 89 of Queen City, Missouri, formerly of Lancaster, Missouri passed away at the Scotland County Hospital in Memphis, Missouri on Monday, March 28, 2011.
The son of Oran Washington and Louise Catherine (Bergman) Figge, he was born on April 25, 1921 in rural Queen City, Missouri. On June 5, 1954 in Durant, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Alice Jensen and to this union, two daughters were born, Cathy and Cecilia.
Russell is survived by his wife, Alice of Lancaster, Missouri; two daughters, Cathy Shepherd of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Cecilia Lawson of Lancaster, Missouri; one son by choice, Doug Shepherd and wife, Lisa of Lancaster, Missouri; five grandchildren, Dennis Shepherd of Lancaster, Missouri, Brent Shepherd of Denver, Colorado, Lerin Kyer and husband, Jeremy of Denver, Colorado, Jessica Lawson of Lancaster, Missouri and Stephanie Lawson of Lancaster, Missouri; three great grandchildren, Mackenzie and Danika Shepherd of Lancaster, Missouri and Amelia Lawson of Lancaster, Missouri; one brother, Charles H. Figge of Centerville, Iowa; one nephew, Howard Figge of Unionville, Missouri; one niece, Roberta Waddle of Fayette, North Carolina; one sister-in-law, Judy Meyers and husband, Milroy of Hermiston, Oregon; and other family members.
Russell is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Boyd Figge and wife, Garnet and Raymond Roy Figge; three sisters, Corinne Gemming and husband, John, Virginia Riggins and husband, Luther and Berniece Miller and her first husband, Sherman Snowbarger and her second husband, Alfred Miller; two siblings who died in infancy, Lloyd and Mary Figge and one sister-in-law, Mary Figge.
Russell was honorable discharged from the Merchant Marines where he served during World War II. Following his discharge, he was employed by the Rock Island Railroad as a depot agent for approximately 16 years. Later he was engaged in farming northwest of Lancaster, Missouri for a number of years. After retiring from the farm, he and Alice moved into Lancaster, where they made their home.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, Missouri with Sonny Smyser, pastor of the Schuyler County Church of Faith officiating. Special CD selections of “When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder,” “In The Garden,” and “The Old Rugged Cross” will be performed. Pallbearers will be James Beeler, Brent Shepherd, Dennis Shepherd, Jeremy Kyer, Brandon Hamilton and Josh Rader. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 1, 2011 between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. at the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, Missouri. Memorials have been established for Schuyler County Nutrition Site. Burial will be in the Arni Memorial Cemetery in Lancaster, Missouri with the Scotland County VFW Post #4958 performing military rites.
